Indigenous nations and communities around the globe are under increasing pressure to develop long-term
sustainable economic development strategies.
The 2006 conference theme Fostering Indigenous Entrepreneurship is timely given the importance and
variety of issues permeating the study and practice of indigenous entrepreneurship on a global scale.
Indigenous entrepreneurship is at the core of current and future economic development for indigenous
nations and communities around the globe.
To this end, the 2006 conference will give participants the opportunity to share ideas, become aware
of issues, directions, and trends that are filtering into indigenous entrepreneurship globally. The
conference will explore the diverse environment of indigenous entrepreneurship, covering a variety of
topics which affect and permeate indigenous entrepreneurships of all sizes and structures. The theme of
the conference not only involves the academic and the practical sides of indigenous entrepreneurship,
but will also provide a forum for debates beyond the session rooms.
The conference will bring together scholars from different regions of the globe, further encouraging
the development of new approaches and ideas, and offering the opportunity to develop joint research
projects. The conference will also present a unique opportunity for participants to network with
indigenous entrepreneurs which will be attending the conferences Indigenous Entrepreneurs Expo.
Through this conference, we hope to enable indigenous business people in the private, public and
tribal/community sectors to present indigenous business opportunities, solutions, and problems to a
local, regional, national, and international audience. We also want to promote networking among
indigenous business people and communities toward problem-solving and business opportunities. We also
seek to develop local, regional, national, and international opportunities and partnerships for students
and faculty of the University of New Mexico.
